RIP J-Dilla

RIP J-Dilla

To most of my readers, I don’t even know what to tell y’all about J-Dilla that you may not already know. Personally he’s one of the biggest influences and even though my taste in music keep changing, there’s nothing like putting on some headphones and listening to Welcome 2 Detroit while I go off on a digital canvas.

I created this wallpaper back in 2006, which evolved into a tee shirt mock up which I never got printed up. Truth be told I posted the design up somewhere and got a cease and desist order from Stones Throw in 2007…but that’s another story for another day. RIP J-Dilla.

SXSW 2010 After Parties and Side Parties

My effin Gawd, I cannot keep up. The best job done, regarding fee parties is Austinist’s SXSWist’s because I seriously cannot keep up with this stuff! I posted what I could…this shit is seriously overwhelming! Look through it, see what you like, RSPV ASAP.

Yo! With the music festival of all music festivals less than a month away, looks like more information on the free parties is starting to flow in. Here are some that I think look pretty cool, make sure you check out Austinist for a crazy comprehensive list and follow their special SXSW twitter feed @sxswist

One of the most interesting looking parties/shows is the Six Stages over Texas block party with VIP tickets including free bourbon, beer and free food…not quite sure what the heck it’s all about, but will update when I find out.

Austin360 recently put up a list of unofficial parties as well, looks like there will be plenty going on.

If you’re having an event you want to promote, hit up the comments section or hit me up on twitter, @thehonestap

Haiti Poster Project Call for Entries

Haiti Poster Project

From the Haiti Poster Project Website:

“A collaboration of artists and designers from around the world, benefiting victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Moxie Sozo, the organizer of the 2005 HURRICANE POSTER PROJECT, is teaming up with Josh Higgins, the organizer of the 2007 SO-CAL FIRE POSTER PROJECT to produce the 2010 HAITI PROJECT.”

The deadline for entries is March 17th, with the goal being to raise $1 million dollars for Doctors without Borders. Check the Haiti Poster Project website for more information.

If I can get some time, I’ll try to put something together for this and see if I can get the printing donated. Looks pretty cool, if any of my readers submit anything, put a link in the comments section.

Freeway & Jake One “Stimulus Package” Packaging

Rhymesayers stays ill with their packaging design. From Atmosphere’s “When Life Gives You Lemons You Paint That Shit Gold” children’s book to this, a full wallet fold and cash package for Freeway and Jake One’s latest album. I don’t even pay that much attention to Freeway really…but damn, I might buy this album just for the packaging. The packaging was done designed and directed by Brent Rollins

Go over to the Rhymesayers site to check out some more pictures of the limited edition packaging.

Oddissee - Odd Winter

Oddissee - Odd Winter

Arguably one of DMV’s most talented musicians, Oddisee, drops another collection of tracks in his seasonal collection. This one has some verses from Homeboy Sandman and Oddisee’s Diamond District bandmate and fellow DMVer, X.O.

I missed Odd Autumn, but make sure you check that one out too.

Dj Rawla and Dj Lee - Yearly Brew 2009

A nice thing about the end of the year is all of the end of the year mixes. The good homie Dj RawLA comes together with Dj Lee for the wrap up of his Brew of The Week mixes/podcast.

RawLA says:

It’s been a minute since I laced you with a Weekly Brew. I had to fall back and refocus on the direction I wanted to take the Series into. With the end of 2009, though, i felt I needed to collaborate with my good friend DJ Lee on a 2009 compilation. I hate using the word ” best” as it’s an arbitrary and subjective term, so I will call this a Yearly Brew 2009. It’s a mix of stuff that Lee and myself thought were gems of the year. A little something for the ladies, the fellas, and everyone in between. The partygoer, the cool out folks, the older, the younger, and those that have an open ear for musica. Shoutouts to the homie Abe from BIGBADMEDIUM for the sick artwork. Definately appreciate the contribution. Check this man’s site out for tons of dope indie music. May 2010 fill you with much luck, prosperity, love, ambition, food, wine, and life. Paz

A Decade of Flying Lotus - Mixed by The Gaslamp Killer (Save As)

Flying Lotus drops a nice christmas present for all his fans. A decades worth of Flying Lotus.  Check it out.

Flying Lotus says:

Merry Christmas and happy holidays to everyone. As we’re approaching this new year, I felt it was time to let go of some things that have been gathering dust. Some old things, and some new things, I tried to pick out tracks that I know yall haven’t heard yet so there should be surprises around every turn. Can’t believe i’ve been making tracks for over 10 years now..That said, there’s so much to learn still.

I hope you all enjoy this mix. Thanks to the Gaslamp Killer for doing an incredible job on this. Can’t wait for you all to hear my album ‘Cosmogramma’ coming out April 20th 2010 on Warp Records.

Enjoy
