Nick Nack – State Machine

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

Dj Nick Nack, long a fixture in Austin’s hip-hop and dj scene, drops his first full length album since 2010′s Dearly Departed. State Machine has a handful of features from some big indie hip hop names: Bavu BlakesA.Dd+, Crew54 and LOEGz.

“State Machine” is inspired by the human apparatus which is a complex ‘machine’ capable of an extremely wide range of ‘states’ (as in conditions with respect to circumstances). As ‘machines’ we can relate to one another through these rich and meaningful ‘states’. They help to define and shape the paths which we travel throughout our lives.

This album in and of itself is meant to be a stateful sonic journey, traversing a variety of genres, moods and styles (from angst riddled raps to relaxing soulful instrumentals).

After my post a few days ago, Bavu hit me up with some more tracks from World Trade’s Channel One, his collaborative project with Element7D. This is one of the most true, soulful, lyrical, hip hop projects I’ve heard in a long time, and by lyrical/soulful I don’t mean hokey “spoken word” (c)rap that so many artists try to pass off as sincere. Singing from Element7D, Bavu and unofficial World Trade member Rochelle Terrell adds a separate layer to many of the tracks and further help comes from appearances by D-Madness, Grupo Fantasma’s Adrian Quesada, and Austin bluesman Gary Clark Jr.

“Do It” was produced by Element7D and features Rochelle Terrell with Gary Clark Jr. on back up vocals and guitar.

World Trade is a collaborative projects between two of Austin’s most talented artist, Bavu Blakes and Element7d. I’ve heard mentions of this project for a while but this is actually the first track I’ve heard and it leaves me wanting to hear more, so hopefully we’ll get the full project soon. This track was produced by Element7D and includes additional vocals from Rochelle Terrell.

512 ANTHEM 09′

Friday, May 1st, 2009

How come no one tells me about tracks like this? Was this even released as a proper single? Does someone have an mp3 and/or an instrumental? Overall pretty sick verses from most…not so sick verses from others however. It always seems like Austin rappers don’t promote much outside of their circles and some I can’t even find through searching online. Either way, it’s good to see Austin artists coming together for a track and even though it’s the “512″ anthem, I’m sure there are plenty of artists that wish they had their chance to rip this track, although alongside Nook’s verse, I’m not sure many people may want to try.  Either way, that would be a good promo for whoever is behind the song, do a contest or just post the instrumental with some sort or creative commons license, or just sell it….but alas.

Nook is an Austin based artist that I’ve heard a few tracks from but wish I could hear some more. Some Austin artists alrady make it hard enough to find their music when you live in the city, let alone when you live on the other side of the country.

Update 05/03/09
NickNack has posted the mp3 up on Gigacrate..and it’s Free! Go download it, while I wait patiently for an instrumental.
