Dj Diamond Tip – Energy Crisis!

Medium and Conspicuous Consumption are proud to bring you a new mix from Dj Diamond Tip, “Energy Crisis!“. This past February, I sent Tip a few tracks I was listening to–it just so happened that he was listening to a lot of similar stuff. We emailed some ideas and songs back and forth, and a few days later Tip put together this mix. It’s a nice mixture of newer tracks and remixes with some classics thrown in for good measure. Check out the tracklisting after the jump.

Inside The Circle on MTV

Monday, January 12th, 2009

The b-boy documentary, “Inside the Circle” directed by Marcy Garriot and featuring many prominent Austinites began airing on Mtv this past Sunday.

The film also features an original soundtrack by Adrian Quesada, best known for his work with Grupo Fantasma. Also included in the soundtrack are a few tracks  Bavu Blakes so make sure you check out the film and support your local scene.

Film Synopsis
Capturing the raw power of a grassroots hip-hop movement in the heart of Texas, INSIDE THE CIRCLE tells the story of two strikingly talented b-boys, Josh and Omar, former best friends who become rivals when they join competing dance crews. Immersed in the b-boy culture of defiant creativity, Omar rises to international renown while Josh tangles with the Texas criminal justice system. Both of them struggle to keep dance at the center of their lives, and the “B-Boy City” competitive events thrown by visionary street dancer Romeo Navarro serve as emotional milestones in their journey to adulthood. Facing off in intense dance battles that mirror the larger events in their lives, Josh and Omar seek redemption, identity and respect “inside the circle.” As Romeo aptly observes: “If you can hold yourself down in battle, you can hold yourself down in life.”

A Bboy’s Take On Step Up 2 The Streets

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

Daniel Ferro
The Following is an inside look at the movie “Step Up 2 The Streets” as written by Daniel Ferro on February 12. Daniel is a professional web designer and b-boy who served as an extra on the set of the movie.

For those that hate to read long reviews, I got to see an early screening of the movie. I’ll summarize it here then elaborate:

1. Good: Surprisingly funny, with good music video-style choreography. Decent acting.

2. Bad: Storyline is as unoriginal as it gets, there is nothing ‘street’ about any of the dancing or clothes or people, there is next to no breakdancing.

3. Ugly: Most of what you see in the trailer that is jaw-dropping good is not in the final movie.

The Dancing
What was immediately obvious to me, and made me so very sad, is they cut out just about all the breakdancing. They went out and hired some of the United State’s best breakdancing talent, K-Mel, Crumbs, Rainen, Shorty, Luigi, Toys, Cricket, and they barely got to breakdance. They were basically reduced to being in an NSYNC video, their individual talents wasted.

In addition, this movie is supposedly about ‘street’ dancing in Baltimore. There is already a street dance native to Baltimore, It’s called Baltimore Club. The closest example I could find is this youtube video, but only the first guy to go out. And there are far better dancers..at least that video will get non-Baltimore people a taste of what its about. THAT is street dancing in Baltimore. And street dancing in general is bboying, no contest. A true Baltimore ‘Street’ competition would feature Bmore club dancing and bboying. Not Christina Aguilera music video dancing.

Why does this happen? Why do all these recent dance movies end up looking like a 2-hour Usher video? Here is a brief history:
