Timbaland and Rockstar Games “Beaterator”

I’m sure anything involving Rockstar Games will be high quality. The game studio’s latest game, “Beaterator”, is based on Rockstar Game’s online Flash based music sequencer launched in 2005, but the title, due out on PSP  September 29th, teams Sony up with superproducer Timbaland in what appears to be a fun digital music simulator.

Timbaland describes the game as a “portable beat machine” with his signature drums, sound and loops included. The game also features live recording and will include different modes, including Live Play, Studio Session, and Song Crafter, all together with a “Social Club” to share your beats with your peers. Check out the Beaterator site to get more information and check out some more live demos.

I look forward to seeing what people can come up with and see who ends up getting in legal trouble with Timbo’s lawyers, when after all, some of the most recent hits even include Apple Garageband loops. I’m cool with it all, as long as I don’t see overzealous rookies hooking up their PSPs to sound systems to do live shows in lieu of having a Dj…although a live show with well known producers creating beats live on the PSP sounds like a great event for the Sony folks.

Either way, a user friendly/fun music generator is a pretty great idea, albeit nothing new. I still remember sitting in 20/20’s college dorm room playing Mtv’s Music Generator on the Playstion, not knowing that just a few years later we would actually all chip in to buy the studios first MPC 2000 and later watch the studio and music grow. I should find that memory card and post up mp3’s of the beats he made on the Playstion, I’m sure they’re pretty hilarious.
